What are the top 3 travel destinations in the world?

April 28, 2015

No sure where to book a trip this year? Look to the millions of people who traverse the globe nonstop. Don't worry, you don't have to administer a poll at work or your next dinner party. Check out TripAdvisor's list of top destinations, based on reviews from people just like you.

Here are the top three choices, according to TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Destinations award.

1. Marrakech, Morocco
Other than the fact that the average temps in March, April and May are 72, 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively, Marrakech is on fire for its spectacle of bohemian markets and unbelievable fare. Even a stroll through the streets is enough to make you feel like you're getting your money's worth. It's truly an existential experience between the luscious gardens, regal palaces and historic mosques. Bring your camera and make sure the batteries are charged!

2. Siem Reap, Cambodia
This northwestern city isn't just for a post-college sojourn to a far-flung place. It has something for everyone between the swanky hotels, luxurious spas and a diverse dining scene that boasts traditional dishes like Khmer red curry and fish amok.

Pick an itinerary that's completely your own or borrow some ideas from the travel publication guru Lonely Planet. Must-sees include the Happy Ranch, which is like the Wild Wild West meets Cambodia meets South Carolina. No wonder it's called Happy Ranch with activities like horseback riding and temple touring. LP also gave a shout out to the Quad Adventure Tour for its adventurous all-terrain biking as well as the entire village of Kompong Pluk. Wear your rain boots if you visit in the wet season when the lake rises and floods the entire forest.

3. Istanbul, Turkey
Explore the intersection where the east meets the west by booking a trip to Istanbul. Meandering around the city is truly a sensory experience between the fragrant spices, luring perfumes and breath-taking architecture. By day, tour the city's rich cultural landmarks, and by night, hit the town to sample mouth-watering cuisine and refreshing libations. Pop into a tavern, or meyhane, for a sit-down meal or stop off at a coffee house to try a local blend.

If you're on a shoe-string budget, there's still plenty to do. Lonely Planet lauded the White cliff waterfalls and Blue Mosque - two of the country's most enticing natural highlights
